Unit counters

What beats what in Total War: Warhammer III, worked out from each unit's own card — patch 9.0. Every unit page has a “Counters” block with the rules below applied to it.

COMPUTEDEach rule pairs something a unit's weapons do with a trait of its target, read from the game's tables (melee_weapons, projectiles, land_units, battle_entities). Base values only: skills, items and abilities add bonuses, resistances and flaming or magical attacks in battle. Examples leave out lords and heroes.

Bonus vs large vs large units

Rule: bonus vs large of 10 or more (melee weapon or projectile) against units whose model is bigger than infantry-sized (battle_entities.size medium or larger: cavalry, monsters, chariots). 128 units have it; 446 are exposed to it.

Bonus vs infantry vs infantry-sized units

Rule: bonus vs infantry of 10 or more against units whose model is infantry-sized (battle_entities.size small). 133 units have it; 340 are exposed to it.

Armour-piercing vs heavily armoured units

Rule: at least half of the damage armour-piercing (melee weapon or projectile) against armour 100 or more — armour does not reduce armour-piercing damage. 435 units have it; 168 are exposed to it.

Magical attacks vs units with physical resistance

Rule: magical attacks (melee_weapons or projectiles is_magical) against physical resistance of 20% or more, which does not apply to magical damage. 161 units have it; 103 are exposed to it.

Flaming attacks vs units weak to fire

Rule: flaming attacks (weapon or projectile ignition_amount above 0) against a negative fire resistance (land_units.damage_mod_flame below 0), which adds damage. 73 units have it; 9 are exposed to it.

Missile fire vs lightly armoured units without shields

Rule: any missile weapon against armour below 50 and no shield (missile block chance 0). 252 units have it; 303 are exposed to it.

Heavy large units vs light infantry-sized units

Rule: large units with mass 1,000 or more against infantry-sized models of mass 200 or less: heavier models tend to knock lighter ones over on impact. 368 units have it; 309 are exposed to it.

By race, the units with the most of each number: best units by the numbers.
